Steady

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get your hound to sit calmly beside you without a word from you when you’re in the park or something has him really excited? Guess what? You can.

Choose a specific way you’ll hold his collar so he understands what you want. When your boy will sit on cue, get him on your left side. Take hold of his collar using the hand position you decided on and ask for a sit. Click. Repeat until he automatically sits as soon as your hand grasps his collar in that special way, without any verbal cue.

When he has that behavior down fairly well, add eye contact. Grasp his collar. When he sits, say “watch me.” As soon as he makes eye contact, click. Gradually fade the verbal cue for attention as well so that all you need to do to get him to sit and look at you is grasp his collar a specific way. Work on adding distractions and duration of eye contact. You want him to sit and make eye contact no matter what’s going on around him.
